Changing your mattress is something we often forget about or put off for another day. But, there are reasons why experts say we need to change our beds every 8-10 years.
The Innersprings Wear and Tear
Coil spring mattresses have springs throughout the interior of the mattress that work to support your body by distributing your weight evenly across the bed.
Over time, these springs lose their support.
You can tell that they’ve lost their support if you start rolling to the middle of the bed unintentionally.
Every few years, you can flip your mattress to distribute the wear and tear more evenly, but this can only be done so many times.
Latex Loses Its Support
Organic latex mattresses are the best beds on the market for longevity and support. When you get a high-quality organic latex mattress, you won’t have to think about changing it for years longer than a standard coil spring mattress.
Latex can hold its shape for longer than 10 years depending on quality and use. But, it’s still a good idea to change it at the 10-year mark.
Why Change Your Mattress
There are a few reasons why you should change your mattress every 8-10 years—the most important one being comfort. When your mattress loses its support and shape, your quality of sleep diminishes.
When you aren’t getting a high quality of sleep, your health is affected. You increase the risk of heart disease and kidney disease, among other things.
Another important reason why you should change your bed is cleanliness. Imagine 10 years of dust mites and dead skin accumulated on your mattress. It’s pretty gross.
But what’s worse is that these can create allergens that can worsen symptoms in people with allergies, asthma, and other respiratory symptoms.
How Do You Know When It’s Time to Change Your Bed?
These are some of the tell-tale signs that you need to change your mattress:
- Your mattress is lumpy
- You can feel springs through the mattress
- You wake up with muscle aches
- Your allergies or asthma has worsened
